Microsoft Surface for Windows RT tablet coming October 26th for $199?

We'll admit to being a little blown away when Microsoft launched the Surface -- it was an impressively polished tablet that we had heard barely a whisper of leading up to the mysterious launch event. But, there was one thing that we were still left wondering: how much would it cost? Now, with Acer getting all in a huff about competition and Microsoft conceding that some OEMs might be a little upset when this thing ships, we might just have an idea for you. According to an inside source, a session was held at Microsoft's recent TechReady15 conference in which all the launch details were laid out. If things go according to the plan detailed then, the Surface for Windows RT tablet will be launching October 26th -- no surprise there -- at a compelling price of $199.

That MRSP, almost certainly lower than Microsoft's own cost, would line it up against the Nexus 7 and even the Kindle Fire. It would put Windows 8 on the map in a big way and give a lot of people a lot of reason to try out an operating system that is going to feel rather different than previous incarnations. The question is: will it drive enough sales of media and apps for Microsoft to recoup its loss? Or, will companies like Acer put up enough of a fight in the months between now and October to keep Microsoft from undercutting its own partners? We'll find out soon, dear readers.

ATLANTA: Home Depot sees signs of improving housing market ...

Earns Home Depot

FILE - In a Nov. 14, 2011 file photo a truck pulls out of the parking lot at a Home Depot store in Oklahoma City. Better sales in the U.S. and healthy demand for its mainstay home-improvement products helped Home Depot's net income rise 13 percent in its fiscal second quarter the company reported Tuesday Aug. 14, 2012.

Sue Ogrocki ? AP Photo

? The Home Depot Inc. is feeling more optimistic about the recovery of the housing market after customers spent more on sprucing up their homes in the second quarter.

The country's biggest home-improvement retailer said Tuesday that strong cost controls and healthy sales of paint, bathroom accessories and kitchen installations helped lift its net income by 12 percent during the period.

The Atlanta-based company boosted its full-year outlook, citing its performance so far this year.

In a conference call with investors, Chairman and CEO Frank Blake noted that some of the strongest growth in the latest quarter came from the markets that were hit hardest in the downturn, such as California and Florida.

"These are encouraging signs of stabilization in the housing market," Blake said.

He also noted that the housing market is now a contributor to the country's gross domestic product, rather than a drag. Another positive sign for Home Depot: the Commerce Department said Tuesday that Americans boosted their spending at retail businesses in July by the largest amount in five months, as spending increased on furniture and building materials, among other items.

Still, the housing market is still a long way from returning to its heyday before the recession. Home Depot's net sales in the quarter rose just 2 percent from a year ago and came in short of Wall Street expectations. And although the company lifted its earnings-per-share forecast, it didn't update its outlook that sales for the year would grow by 4.6 percent.

When the housing market is weak, companies such as Home Depot struggle because new construction slows and contractors don't spend as much on supplies. Homeowners also pull back on projects, such as kitchen or bathroom renovations.

Although customers still aren't spending as much on their homes as during the housing bubble, Home Depot said it saw signs of improvements in key areas.

Overall, revenue at stores open at least a year rose 2.1 percent, which was slower than the 4.3 percent growth last year. The company noted that the warm winter pulled sales of many seasonal items, such as gardening products, into the first quarter.

In the U.S., where the majority of Home Depot's stores are located, the figure rose 2.6 percent. The metric is a key gauge of a retailer's health because it strips out the impact of recently opened or closed locations.

Transactions of $900 or more, which make up about 20 percent of U.S. sales, rose 3.4 percent in the quarter, as appliance, kitchen and flooring sales increased. Transactions of $50 or less, which also make up about 20 percent of sales, were down 0.7 percent.

The company attributed the decline to the sales of seasonal items into the first quarter.

Brian Sozzi, chief equities analyst with NBG Productions, noted that the improvement in sales of bigger-ticket items suggests consumers are opening up to the possibility of larger projects, such as redoing their cabinets. They're also spending on other items.

"People are buying lawn mowers and other items they weren't necessarily buying in 2010 or 2011, when they just didn't want to put that on their credit cards," he said.

Home Depot's total operating expenses also eased to $4.46 billion during the quarter, down 3 percent from a year ago. The improvement was partly the result of tight cost controls and a new regulation that caps the amount banks can charge retailers when customers pay with debit cards.

In the second half of the year, however, Home Depot expects expenses to rise as it spends on new call centers and other operational improvements.

Looking ahead, Home Depot now expects fiscal 2012 earnings of $2.95 per share, up from the $2.90 per share it previously forecast. Revenue is still expected to rise 4.6 percent, implying $73.63 billion.

Analysts expect earnings of $2.92 per share on revenue of $73.95 billion.

Home Depot runs more than 2,200 stores. Its smaller rival Lowe's Cos. reports its earnings Monday.

Shares of Home Depot rose $1.60, or 3 percent, to $54.42 in morning trading.

Tanzania confirms it re-flagged 36 Iran ships, to deregister them

DAR ES SALAAM (Reuters) - Tanzania said a shipping agent based in Dubai had reflagged 36 Iranian oil tankers with the Tanzanian flag without the country's knowledge and approval.

Tanzania said it was now in the process of de-registering the vessels after an investigation into the origin of the ships concluded they were originally from Iran.

Tanzania launched an investigation last month over accusations that it had reflagged oil tankers from Iran and asked the United States and European Union to help it verify the origin of the tankers flying the east African country's flag.

A report with the investigation's findings was discussed in the House of Representatives of Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania late on Friday, and the minutes of that debate were seen by Reuters late on Saturday.

Reflagging ships masks their ownership, which could make it easier for Iran to obtain insurance and financing for the cargoes, as well as find buyers for the shipments without attracting attention from the United States and European Union.

The National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) changed the names and flags of many of its oil tankers ahead of the EU ban, part of sweeping economic measures aimed at pressuring Tehran to end its nuclear program.

The ships flying Tanzania's flag were re-flagged by Zanzibar, which has claimed it was misled by its Dubai-based agent, Philtex, and would end its contract with that firm.

"The government has thoroughly investigated this issue and established that the Zanzibar Maritime Authority (ZMA) through our Dubai-based agent, Philtex, registered 36 Iranian crude oil tankers and containership vessels to fly the Tanzanian flag," Zanzibar Vice President Seif Ali Iddi told the assembly.

"The Zanzibar government is in the process of de-registering the ships and also terminating its agency contract with Philtex after establishing the truth that these (Iranian) ships are flying the Tanzanian flag."

Howard Berman, the ranking member of the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs, had accused Tanzania of reflagging at least six and possibly as many at 10 tankers, saying it was helping Iran evade U.S. and European Union sanctions aimed at pressuring Tehran to curb its nuclear program.

He said Tanzania could face U.S. sanctions for the practice.

Berman has also asked the small South Pacific island nation Tuvalu to stop reflagging Iranian oil tankers and warned its government of the risks of running afoul of U.S. sanctions.

Republican VP pick Ryan: from young gun to top gun

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In tapping Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan to be his vice presidential running-mate, Mitt Romney has chosen an ambitious, self-described "young gun" who has staked his entire career on a single issue -- slashing the federal budget.

Ryan, 42, has spent most of his adult life in Congress, with little business or executive experience to speak of.

He steadily built his credibility as a Washington insider, starting as an intern on Capitol Hill and then becoming an aide to a Republican senator from Wisconsin.

For the past 14 years, Ryan has served as a member of the House of Representatives.

But it was his 2010 manifesto "Young Guns, A New Generation of Conservative Leaders" that elevated Ryan's prominence.

The document, which he co-authored, showcased the small government, "opportunity society" that he had been advocating for years to smaller audiences.

It provided a national forum for promoting Ryan's political agenda and made him a favorite of the anti-tax, limited-government Tea Party movement.

The manifesto also previewed the course he would steer when he became the chairman of the House Budget Committee in January, 2011, after his party scored historic gains in the 2010 elections and wrested control of the House from Democrats.

Ryan's budget-slashing agenda is one that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney hopes will take him and Ryan to the White House in November's elections, spurred by voter anger over a stubbornly weak U.S. economy.

Ryan also adds personal appeal to the Republican ticket.

A Green Bay Packers football fanatic, Ryan often makes reference to his Midwestern roots and how he prioritizes spending time in Wisconsin with his wife, Janna Little, a tax attorney, and their three young children.

Ryan is also a fitness buff -- his father and grandfather both died of heart attacks in their 50s -- and leads his fellow lawmakers in what has been described as a grueling daily exercise group.

ATTACK TARGET

A nimble debater known for his intellectual heft, Ryan has frequently made television appearances in recent years trying to advance his goals of reining in spending on expensive government programs, such as food stamps for the poor and the Medicare health entitlement for the elderly.

Ryan has also pledged to fight for a vigorous defense budget while also slashing taxes.

But Democrats were quick to hit Ryan hard following the announcement on Saturday that he was Romney's vice presidential pick, arguing that the Wisconsin congressman would simply place the burden of deficit reduction on those who could least bear it -- the poor and elderly -- while cutting taxes for the rich.

Democrats' attacks last year, including a television ad showing a Ryan look-alike pushing a grandmother in a wheelchair off a cliff, seemed to resonate with voters.

But Ryan, who in the past has named conservative economist Milton Friedman, supply-side icon and former Republican vice presidential nominee Jack Kemp and pro-capitalist philosopher Ayn Rand as heroes, won respect from many corners.

Even some Democratic aides in Congress have said they admired his grasp of complicated fiscal issues and his sincerity in attacking problems that had contributed to a mountain of government debt.

President Barack Obama has commended Ryan for his serious approach to budgeting, while attacking the specific proposals.

Respected budget experts in Congress also hold him in high regard. "He is the single politician, in the face of ... people sweeping the issue under the carpet, who was willing to get specific" on deficit cutting, Maya MacGuineas, head of the non-partisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, told Reuters early last year.

NARROW PORTFOLIO

Ryan also has tried to show a pragmatic side, continually noting that both Democrats and Republicans have been at fault in creating a fiscal mess in the world's largest economy -- and that both would have to find solutions.

A vice president is expected to provide counsel and leadership on issues much broader than the U.S. budget, however, and there is little in Ryan's background that gives him a deep grounding in foreign policy, military affairs or business.

His stump speeches sometimes note the need for a strong U.S. defense and his budget plans would maintain or even grow already robust Pentagon spending.

His congressional website devotes little to foreign policy issues, mainly embracing core Republican beliefs in America's need to defend Israel, while expressing concerns that Obama's planned withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Afghanistan "has the potential to pose security threats to soldiers" still there "as well as to compromise the larger mission in Afghanistan."

Unlike some Republicans, however, he refrained from criticizing the U.S. withdrawal from Iraq and winding down a war that added hundreds of billions of dollars to budget deficits.

While Ryan's budgets have stirred Democratic opposition, they also have drawn some discontent from House conservatives, who want a much faster draw-down of deficits.

Even though activists from the conservative Tea Party movement on Saturday were applauding Romney's choice, some have ridiculed Ryan's budget blueprint, which acknowledges it would take nearly three decades to erase deficits.

Ironically, as Ryan's political star has risen -- there were even calls early last year for him to run for president in 2012 -- his profile in Congress has been less visible lately.

When navigating the halls of Congress, Ryan almost always is seen listening to music through ear buds, making it easier to breeze past reporters.

He was largely absent from the big fiscal debates of 2011 - from Republicans' showdown last summer with Obama over a deficit-reduction plan, to the failed "super committee" effort to find an additional $1.2 trillion in savings, and the Republicans' disastrous fight with Obama over extending a payroll tax cut.

That led one Republican congressional aide to observe that Ryan had "taken the safe route to preserve his conservative credentials" by focusing on theoretical budget proposals and avoiding the tough fights in Congress.

That aide and others also noted earlier this week that Ryan has failed to reach out to Democrats, instead writing budgets that get little bipartisan support.

But the freshly-minted vice presidential candidate touted a record on Saturday that he said was marked by "getting things done in Congress" -- accomplishments that he said would compliment "Governor Romney's executive and private sector success outside of Washington."

The panoramic mosaic, comprising 130 separate images that Curiosity captured with its newly activated navigation cameras, shows a rust-colored, pebble-strewn expanse stretching to a wall of the crater's rim in one direction and a tall mound of layered rock in another.

That formation, named Mount Sharp, stands at the center of the vast, ancient impact crater and several miles from where Curiosity touched down at the end of an eight-month voyage across 352 million mile (566 million km) of space.

The layers of exposed rock are thought to hold a wealth of Mars' geologic history, making it the main target of exploration for scientists who will use the rover to seek evidence of whether the planet most similar to Earth might now harbor or once have hosted key ingredients for microbial life.

But mission controllers at the?Jet Propulsion Laboratory?near Los Angeles are exercising caution immediately following Curiosity's jarring, death-defying descent to the surface on Sunday night.

They plan to spend weeks putting the nuclear-powered, six-wheeled rover and its sophisticated array of instruments through a painstaking series of "health" checks before embarking on the thrust of their science mission in earnest.

The $2.5 billion Curiosity project, formally named the Mars?Science Laboratory, is NASA's first astrobiology mission since the Viking probes of the 1970s and is touted as the first fully equipped mobile geochemistry lab ever sent to a distant world.

Equipment Checkups?

After three full days on the Red Planet, "Curiosity continues to behave flawlessly" and has "executed all planned activities" without a hitch, mission manager?Michael Watkins?said at a JPL news briefing.

The latest round of equipment checks included an instrument designed to determine mineral composition of powdered rock and soil samples; one to analyze soil and atmospheric samples for organic compounds; one to detect traces of water locked in shallow mineral deposits; and another that uses particle X-rays to identify chemical elements in rocks and soils.

The very delivery of Curiosity to the surface of Mars?already has been hailed by NASA as the greatest feat of robotic spaceflight.

The car-sized rover, which flew from Earth encased in a protective capsule, blasted into the Martian sky at hypersonic speed and landed safely seven minutes later after an elaborate, daredevil descent combining a giant parachute with a rocket-pack that lowered the rover to the Martian surface on a tether.

Since then, the rover has been sending a string of early images back to Earth, relayed by two NASA satellites orbiting Mars, providing glimpses of a terrain that scientists say appear reminiscent of the Mojave Desert in?Southern California.

One shot beamed back late Wednesday night, the first taken by Curiosity of itself, shows the rover's top deck strewn with dark pebbles apparently kicked up from the ground when the craft landed. NASA scientists said the gravel does not appear to pose any risk to instruments on the vehicle.

Two separate high-resolution "Navcam" images taken of the surface show that thrust from the sky-crane rockets during descent carved out a 1.5-foot (0.5-meter) trench in the surface, exposing what appears to be Martian bedrock underneath.

When Curiosity wakes up for its fourth day on Mars, early Friday?California?time, mission controllers plan to conduct additional instrument checks and prepare the craft for an upgrade of its main computer software for surface operations. All other activities will be suspended during that upgrade, which will begin on day 5 of the mission and last four days.

AKRON, Ohio (AP) ? People responding to the sound of what they thought was a problem with an oxygen tank in a patient's Ohio hospital room discovered a man dressed in black with a gun. Then they realized the noise was a shot, a 911 caller told a dispatcher in a recording.

As authorities continued investigating what may have been a mercy killing, the 911 recording was released on Tuesday.

The suspect, John Wise, 66, appeared before an Akron Municipal Court judge via video from jail on an aggravated attempted murder charge. His bond was set at $1 million. He is due back for arraignment Wednesday morning.

The emergency call came from an Akron hospital where police believe Wise calmly walked into the facility and shot his wife in the head. The caller, apparently a nurse, said she had gone to hide in a room down the hall but could hear a commotion in a neurology intensive care unit, with people yelling and running nearby.

"I think I need to go out there. Seriously, I think someone's coding or something," she said before the recording ended. Around the same time, another caller from hospital security confirmed to a dispatcher that a patient had been shot.

Wise appeared perplexed at the attempted murder charge brought against him when he stood before the judge on Tuesday, asking whether his wife was indeed dead.

Hours later, a medical examiner issued a report ruling the woman's death from the gunshot wound a homicide, clearing the way for prosecutors to consider more serious charges in the shooting of Wise's wife of 45 years.

Wise, who lived with his wife, Barbara, in Massillon, is charged with shooting her at her bedside in the ICU unit of Akron General Medical Center on Saturday. She died the next morning.

Wise surrendered to hospital security after the shooting and has cooperated with investigators.

He apparently was confused about the attempted murder charge Tuesday, asking, "Is she not dead?"

Visiting Judge Marvin Shapiro didn't answer his question but said he would soon have an attorney who could. "We're going to get you an attorney who will be able to answer all of your questions for you, sir," Shapiro told him.

Messages were left with Tuesday with Andrea Whitaker, who was listed as Wise's attorney in court records filed after the court appearance. They were not immediately returned.

Police said Barbara Wise had been in critical condition in the ICU for several days, but details of her illness haven't been made public.

Emergency personnel responded to the Wises' home a week before the shooting for a medical call that involved advanced life support, including oxygen and a heart monitor. Hospital and emergency officials have said they can't disclose any information about patients because of privacy rules.

Officials are looking into whether Wise shot his wife in a mercy killing, said Akron police Capt. Dan Zampelli.

Wise entered the hospital through the main entrance and went up to his wife's room without drawing any attention, apparently keeping the handgun concealed, hospital spokesman Jim Gosky said.

Hospital security officers ran from the ground floor's emergency department to the ICU's third floor after an alert sounded that someone had a weapon, Gosky said.

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets were moderately higher Tuesday, continuing to get a boost from an unexpected improvement in U.S. hiring that added to signs the global economy might be emerging from its downturn.

Sentiment was also underpinned by expectations that the European Central Bank will support struggling countries such as Spain and Italy by buying their sovereign bonds.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.7 percent to 8,788.18 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 0.3 percent to 20,056.09.

Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.5 percent to 4,292.80. South Korea's Kospi rose marginally to 1,887.66. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and New Zealand also rose. Mainland Chinese stocks were mixed.

Hopes that China's central bank was preparing to announce steps to spur growth in the world's No. 2 economy also helped boost confidence in stocks, analysts said. A weekend statement by the People's Bank of China was interpreted as a sign that more monetary easing was in store.

"Sentiment is turning more positive right now. Market turnover is increasing gradually. Money is coming back to the market, said Linus Yip, strategist at First Shanghai Securities in Hong Kong.

For instance, last week's daily average turnover in Hong Kong was 46.3 billion Hong Kong dollars ($5.97 billion), while Monday's figure stood at HK$47 billion. July's daily average was $HK43.3 billion. "You can see volume is gradually increasing, which means sentiment is turning more positive," Yip said.

Markets fell the first four days of last week after investors were disappointed by the lack of specific action from central banks in Europe and the U.S. to support the economy. The Dow Jones industrial average lost 197 points from Monday through Thursday.

The Dow soared 217 points on Friday, however, following a stronger-than-expected jobs report. The U.S. economy generated 163,000 jobs last month, the fastest pace since February and far more than economists were expecting. The upturn was seen as a sign that the U.S. may be resilient enough to pull out of a midyear slump and grow modestly.

Among individual stocks, Japanese steel companies JFE Holdings and Nippon Steel Corp. gained 4 percent and 3.9 percent respectively. Shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. added 2.3 percent.

Australia's resources sector posted solid gains. Mining giant Rio Tinto Ltd. rose 1.2 percent. Energy Resources of Australia Ltd. added 1.1 percent. Mining equipment maker Bradken Ltd. soared 8.1 percent after announcing a 49 percent rise in profits due to its exposure to booming resource sectors.

The Dow rose 0.2 percent to close at 13,117.51 on Monday. The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 0.2 percent to 1,394.23. The Nasdaq composite index rose 22.01, or 0.7 percent, to 2,989.91.

Benchmark crude for September delivery was down 30 cents to $91.90 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 80 cents to finish at $92.20 per barrel in New York.

In currency trading, the euro fell to $1.2394 from $1.2399 late Monday in New York. The dollar fell to 78.18 yen from 78.22 yen.

New York digs up bodies in potter's field

Melinda Hunt / AP file

Since 1869, more than 800,000 people have been laid to rest at the potter's field on the island that lies in the waters just off the Bronx borough of New York City.

By Jonathan Dienst, NBC New York

The New York City medical examiner's office is digging up dozens of unidentified bodies buried in the city's potter's field as part of a new push to solve unsolved missing persons? cases.

In recent months, 54 bodies have been exhumed from Hart Island, which sits on the Long Island Sound. More than 800,000 people are buried there, most of them poor citizens, officials say.?

The unidentified include runaways, the homeless and others whose families lost track of them. And now dozens of positive identifications are being made, thanks to improved DNA technology.

Encouraged by the success, the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner applied for and received a grant from the?National Institute of Justice to continue their work. Investigators are now poring over decades of records.

"We have about 1,200 cases that we are working on that go to the late 1980s," said Dr. Benjamin Figueroa, who is helping to supervise the search effort.

In examining the skeletal remains of unidentified persons, anthropologists are able to extract DNA samples and glean new leads that weren't contained in the original case files. Modern science can now indicate whether remains belonged to a male or female and roughly how old the person was.

Read the original story at NBCNewYork.com

"We can go back now and say, for example, it's actually a black female age 17 to 25," said Dr. Bradley Adams. "There's work we can do now with forensic anthropology which couldn't be done back in the time."

Many advances in DNA technology came about from identifying human remains recovered at the site of the World Trade Center attacks after 9/11. Scientists at New York?s new forensic lab are entering DNA samples from exhumed bodies into local and national databases.

But generating the DNA?samples is only half the battle, said assistant lab director Mark Desire.

"Equally challenging is to get a DNA profile to compare it to a family," said Desire. "Part of the big push is to make sure reference families' samples get in the system."

Without a DNA?sample from relatives, cases often cannot be solved. If some of the people buried are from out of state or overseas, it's especially difficult to make the match.

That appears to be the case with "Baby Hope," the 6-year-old girl whose starved body was found stuffed in a cooler in the woods off the Henry Hudson Parkway in 1991.

"You have information that can make a very straightforward identification, but nobody is looking for that child," said Adams. "Otherwise, there would be a DNA hit. It's hard to believe you'd have a child ... that's still unidentified."

In cases where a DNA?match fails, scientists may turn NAMUS, a national website that lists missing people, unidentified bodies and clothing found on bodies.

"The great thing about NAMUS is there is a whole community of volunteers and cybersleuths ... who will analyze what we put on the website,"?said Figueroa.??There have been a number of times where somebody from the general public has pointed us to a missing person in connection with one of our unidentified."

"We don't pass judgment on who that person was," Figueroa said. "If there is something that can be done, we're going to do it. It's our job to identify that person. Doesn't matter if that case came in today or 20 years ago."

From a legal and financial standpoint, officials say a family can move forward once they have a death certificate in their hands.

In?Queens, 83-year-old Gloria Chait has held on to her son Steven's belongings and has renderings of what her son might look like now, decades after he disappeared from his dorm room at Columbia University in 1972.

"I love this kid," said Chait, who still keeps Steven's belongings in his room in their Fresh Meadows home. "No one wants to go 40 years not knowing where your child is."

But she also has a grim hope that the city's new push to identify the "lost souls" of Hart Island may finally give her answers as to what happened to Steven.

"You can't be cynical about this. You have to be realistic and a bit optimistic," said Chait.?"You have to understand what kind of suffering goes with a person that disappears. It is immeasurable."

Tie the Knot Tuesday ? Starrene & Anslem - Black Bridal Bliss

Meet Mr. & Mrs. Rocque!

Bride:?Starrene Rhett, 30
Groom:?Anslem Samuel Rocque, 35
Occupations:?writers and bloggers
Homebase: Chicago, Illinois
Wedding Date:?January 14, 2012
Wedding Location:?ceremony and brunch reception: Akwaaba Bed & Breakfast; Brooklyn, New York

Office Romance ?We met over the phone,? explains Starrene when asked how she met her husband Anslem. ?I worked in public relations and he ran a magazine, so I?d call him to pitch my clients. She continues, ?I was impressed with his phone demeanor.? Anslem reflects, ?We eventually met face-to-face at a mutual friend?s birthday party months after building a good rapport over the phone.? What was Anslem?s first impression of Starrene after finally meeting her? ?She was hot!? he quips. He adds, ?I had an idea based on her MySpace photos, but she was even more striking in person. Since we had a work relationship?and she had a boyfriend?I tried to keep it [professional].? Starrene agrees her then boyfriend raised a red flag once meeting Anslem but admits, ?I had never been that attracted to anyone before.??

Timing is Everything ?Our courtship was a rollercoaster ride,? shares Starrene. Eventually her and said boyfriend? broke up and she and Anslem started dating. Anslem recalls, ?Once her relationship dissolved we started to hang out and evolved into something more than friends.? However, Anslem was also dating other people. ?He ended up falling in love with someone else and breaking it off with me,? Starrene says. ?I moved on but as fate would have it, I got a job at the magazine where he worked.? Working together meant they had to get back on speaking terms (Starrene was understandably livid with Anslem.) and the pair over time became cool again. Things didn?t work out with Anslem and the other woman. Their romance was rekindled but Anslem had reservations about dating a coworker. Starrene says, ?We ended up getting laid off on the same day and the rest is history.?

[Photography by Kalalea, excluding honeymoon pic.]

I See the Future in Your Eyes It took some time to get on the same page but when they did, Anslem realized Starrene was much more than just another woman he wanted to date. ?She is my favorite person and oftentimes in relationships, when you?re really honest with yourself, you can see an end to it. With Starr I don?t see an end to this story so I want to keep on writing new chapters of our life together.? The couple took annual vacations together and last year considered a trip to St. Lucia. ?My family is from there,? says Anslem. He continues, ?When St. Lucia was suggested it all clicked. I said, ?Book the ticket.? I was on the fence about progressing forward as most men are, but had come to the realization that Starr might be ?the one?. Once St. Lucia came up, I had the location [to propose] and all doubt went away. I had always loved her but it was in that moment I [wanted to ask her to be my wife].? A surprised Starrene happily accepted (?I wasn?t expecting a proposal!? she says.) and the couple returned home to Brooklyn engaged.

A Great Day in Brooklyn The creative couple wed before 60 guests in an intimate bed and breakfast after seeing it featured on Triple B. The bride did her own hair and makeup and wore subtle accessories from Forever 21. ?We wanted our day to be low key; a reflection of us. Honestly, I didn?t want a wedding for a long time but when the thought of marriage became real, I decided I did want some kind of ceremony. We kept it simple and had a morning ceremony followed by brunch,? Starrene shares. The New York natives who honeymooned in Japan have already experienced an unexpected twist since marriage as they now reside in Chicago. ?We didn?t plan to leave NYC but here we are, in a new city. Anslem has a new job and my career is at a standstill,? reports Starrene. Anslem reveals, ?Marriage is a challenge but it feels great having a partner to walk alongside me. I?m excited about exploring our new city together and making a new home for ourselves.?

Starrene?s Money-Saving Tips for Future Brides

Let Them Eat Cupcakes Starrene warns, ?Consider a cupcake tree instead of a full cake. It cuts food waste in a lot of cases and they can be considerably less expensive.?

Gifts Come in Various Forms ?Our best man is a professional graphic designer and we asked him to create invitations pro-bono as a wedding gift. He agreed, delivered excellent product that typically costs at least a few hundred dollars, and still gave us an additional wedding gift anyway, shares Starrene.

Shhh?Keep It a Secret (!)??Don?t always tell vendors that you?re planning a wedding, because they will hike prices up 75% in many cases. It might be hard to fudge the truth, but gauge where and with whom you can get around talking about doing a wedding. Just say you?re planning a formal event; that?s still kind of the truth,? Starrene advises.

Some of the Top Advantages to Using Internet Marketing | ???? ...

People in businesses of all kinds are using internet marketing more and more to sell their products. The internet has grown at a phenomenal pace in recent years, and its presence in people?s lives is just as a strong as older media such as newspapers and television. The biggest plus point here when compared to other mediums is that; it?s a lot more interactive, which makes it more approachable.

All kinds of businesses, of all sizes, are learning that the internet gives them a powerful opportunity to reach their target audience. The sheer number of people you can reach through proper online marketing can go into millions. You have to become familiar with your audience, those people who are not watching television but looking online to find what they are looking for. As more people become knowledgeable about the internet, and spend more of their time online, the potential of online marketing will only increase. Time has become the commodity people value most, which is why so many have embraced the internet, the single most powerful means to network with others immediately, regardless of where in the world they live. There are many ways that online marketing can make your business more efficient and profitable; let?s look at some of these now.

While you can spend money to advertise online, you can also find many advertising methods that are low cost or free. If you need website traffic, for example, there are many free ways to accomplish this. You can do banner or ezine advertising for your site or invest in pay per click advertising, but if you are just starting out you may want to try some free techniques first. If your site is optimized with the search engines, you?ll attract free, or organic traffic, as people will find your site when they do searches online. Another thing you can do is submit articles on the topic of your website and products to directories. Once you start investigating, you?ll find how many free ways there are to promote your website.

You don?t even need to have your own product to get started with internet marketing. Some of the most successful internet marketers, in fact, make their money as affiliates for someone else?s products. It?s quite simple to get set up as an affiliate, where you earn a commission for every sale you make. When you join an affiliate program, you don?t have to worry about anything. There is nothing for you to do but advertise the affiliate site and bring traffic to it.

Last but not the least, the profit margin will always be high since you won?t be incurring any major costs. This means that a high percentage of the money you take in will be profit. Another great thing about the internet is that there are many downloadable products you can sell, such as video or e-courses, where shipping costs are non-existant. A more profitable business model also gives you more room to experiment with different kinds of advertising until you find the type that works best for you. Internet marketing is probably the most potentially profitable enterprise available to most people today. For under a hundred dollars (at most) and a few hours of set-up, you can start your own online business.

Founder wants to take Best Buy private

Elise Amendola / AP

Founder Richard Schulze, who stepped down as chairman, is trying to reclaim control of the company with the help of private equity firms.

By Roland Jones, NBC News

Updated at 11:45 a.m. ET: Richard Schulze, the founder and former chairman of Best Buy, has offered to buy the struggling electronics retailer and take it private in a deal that values the company at more than $8.1 billion.

Schulze is offering to buy all the outstanding shares of Best Buy (BBY) he does not already own for $24 to $26 per share in cash, at least a 36 percent premium over Friday's closing price. The company?s shares were up 16 percent at $20.49 in midday trading Monday, suggesting a lukewarm reception for Schulze?s offer.

The potential deal values the struggling electronics retailer at between $8.16 billion and $8.84 billion, according to Reuters.

In a statement, Best Buy confirmed that its Board of Directors had received Schulze?s letter, which it called ?an unsolicited, highly conditional indication of interest.? The company added that it will evaluate the proposal carefully and pursue the best course for its shareholders.

Schulze is Best Buy?s largest shareholder, controlling 20.1 percent of the company?s shares.

He is seeking the board?s permission to conduct due diligence on the company and put together a consortium that includes other executives and private-equity investors to make an offer for Best Buy. Minnesota corporate law requires Schulze to seek permission from company directors to form the group.

?It is my strong preference to pursue an acquisition cooperatively with the Best Buy Board of Directors,? he said in a statement. ?I have made repeated requests to the Board for several weeks to provide me with due diligence information and the consent to form a group required under Minnesota law, both of which will be necessary to reach a definitive agreement.?

Schulze said his preference was for private negotiation with Best Buy, but felt the urgency of Best Buy situation required immediate action, noting that further delay and indecision would lead to the loss of talented company leaders and company value.

Best Buy has struggled in recent quarters as customers have migrated to Apple and online retailers such as Amazon.com.

?There is no question that now is the moment of truth for Best Buy and that immediate and substantial changes are needed for the company to return to its market-leading ways,? Schulze said.

Schulze, 71, has reportedly been exploring taking the world's largest electronics retailer private since stepping down as its chairman in June.

He stepped down from the company after an internal probe found he failed to tell the retailer?s board about allegations that former chief executive Brian Dunn was having an inappropriate relationship with a 29-year-old female subordinate.

Dunn, who resigned in April, ?violated company policy by engaging in an extremely close personal relationship with a female employee that negatively impacted the work environment,? according to an internal investigation by the retailer?s audit committee.

Analyst Michael Lasser of UBS told CNBC he is doubtful that private-equity investors would want to get involved in a deal for Best Buy.

?Past performance has shown it?s very difficult to bring a challenged retailer back to the public markets,? he said, citing Toys ?R? Us and ?several other examples.?

?That to me suggests a lot of skepticism around this deal,? he added.

Michael Lasser, UBS analyst, explains the impact of the retailer going private and assess the outlook on the company's sales and earnings.

Toxic algae warning for Kitsap Lake - Bremerton Patriot

By Patrick McDonough

pmcdonough@soundpublishing.com

The Kitsap Public Health District has issued a toxic algae health advisory for residents and visitors of Kitsap Lake.

The warning is based upon ongoing testing of blue green algae in the lake, and officials said the water can cause illness in humans and kill pets, fish, waterfowl and livestock.

Water samples collected July 24 revealed levels of toxins to be at 6.7 per liter of water. Warnings are issued by the district when levels reach or exceed 6.0 per liter of water.

Jim Zimny, Senior Environmental Health Specialist for the Kitsap Public Health District, said the lake water is particularly dangerous to the young.

?We really need to emphasize that younger children are especially at risk,? Zimny said. ?Because of their body size they are more susceptible to illness. ?

Symptoms of illness from ingestion of the lake water can include skin rash, dizziness or weakness, respiratory allergy, abdominal pain, diarrhea or vomiting.

Zimny said anyone exhibiting these symptoms should seek immediate and proper medical attention.

During the advisory, residents and visitors are urged to avoid drinking water from the lake, avoid swimming and other water contact activities, limit access of pets and livestock to lake water, avoid consuming fish caught during the algae bloom and rinsing boats and trailers before traveling to another lake.

Lake-goers are also advised to contact the health district if they notice large numbers of dead fish in the lake, sudden or unexplained sickness or death of a pet cat or dog or the onset of skin rash, dizziness or weakness, respiratory allergy, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or vomiting in people after contact with lake water.

Speaking of Art, Al Williamson's Fly | Simon and Kirby

This is the start of a new topic for the Simon and Kirby blog where I will write about original comic book art. This will not be a serial post where I would explore a subject over a number of posts. Instead each post will stand by itself with only the common theme of original art connecting them. There will be no order in what I write about and I will pick the particular subject as my mood suits me. Some of the pieces will be from my personal collection but most will be from the much more extensive collection that belonged to Joe Simon. I do that with the permission of the Joe Simon estate.

It is clear that many people, even comic book fans, really do not ?get? original comic book art. But there is something very special about the original art as compared to the published comic books. It is not that the printing of the comic books was so bad (although that is certainly true) or that original art is unique while thousands of copies of a comic book may exist (but true again). What is truly special about the art is that it reveals the hand of the creators in ways that are simply not possible from the printed comic. There are nuances in things like inking that completely get lost in the production process. There are changes in the art that many people would consider blemishes but instead provide insight into the creative process. I remember a story about Joe Sinnott erasing margin notes because he thought it distracted from the art. Some original art have subject to extensive cleaning processes to remove all blemishes. I am sure this was done in an attempt to increase the value of the piece but to me it actually has quite the opposite effect. What may seem blemishes to some has an aesthetic quality for me. While aesthetics play an important roll in the value of original art, they have historical value as well.

Before writing about the original art for ?One Of Our Skyscrapers Is Missing? by Al Williamson I would like to discuss a story that Joe Simon use to tell. Here it is as presented in his autobiography Joe Simon, My Life In Comics where he is talking about the Harvey Comics title Race For The Moon:

When I proposed the title, Jack welcomed the work. I wrote most of the stories, although Dick Wood, Dave Wood and Eddie Herron contributed some scripts. Because Kirby was penciling some of them, I was able to sign up three of the best inkers in the business. Reed Crandall, Angelo Torres, and Al Williamson, each of them a brilliant artist in his own right, all wanted to work with Jack. In addition to inking Jack?s pencils, they got to illustrate some stories on their own.

Although in his book Joe describes this story as concerning Race For The Moon, I remember Joe telling me that he heard about the story from something Williamson said. Williamson gave an interview for Jack Kirby Collector #15 where he discusses his work on Race For The Moon. I have written about Williamson?s comments in an recent post (Kirby Inkers, Al Williamson) but the what is important here is Williamson does not relate this story when talking about Race For The Moon. But in another part of the interview:

TJKC: You did a solo story for The Fly #2. How?d you get that job?

AL: I was asked by the editor, and he gave me a five-pager to do. I?d never done superhero stuff before, and I sat down and did this Jack Kirby-type character they wanted me to do. I penciled it and took it in, and the editor had a fit. ?Aahh, you?re a lousy artist. This is no good.? I had to do the first two pages over again, and he paid me $45 for five pages of work. And when it came out, the only thing he?d changed was the splash, and he?d copied it from Jack. I was really pissed off. So dear old Angelo Torres gets a call from this guy, and he says, ?I gave Williamson a job, and he?s a lousy artist, he can?t draw. I want you to do this four-page Fly story for me.? So Angelo went up and said, ?Sure, I?ll do it.? Then he came over to the house and said, ?Listen, Al. This guy said you can?t draw, you?re a lousy artist, and he wants me to do this four-page superhero thing, so I thought maybe I?d let you pencil it.? (laughter) So I did! I penciled the four pages, and gave it to Angelo, and he took it up. The editor looked at it and said, ?See, this is great! You?re better than Williamson!? (laughter) So Angelo inked it, and the guy never knew I penciled it.

Clearly this is the same story but it concerns work for Adventures of the Fly #2. Williamson does not name the editor but it was Simon who put together the first four issues of Adventures of the Fly and he alone chose the artists and assigned the work.

Adventures of the Fly #2 (September 1959) ?One Of Our Skyscrapers Is Missing?, pencils by Al Williamson

In Williamson?s version of this tale he drew two stories for the issue. One that Joe was unhappy with and another drawn without Simon?s knowledge of his involvement. Williamson claims that Simon changed the splash of the first story but the rest was printed with no alterations. Williamson?s drawing style is very distinctive and there is no need for the original art to say with certainty that Williamson only drew one story for any issue of Adventures of the Fly. The drawing style alone would suggest that the splash for the story was pure Williamson. But the original art does conclusively shows that no changes were made to any of the art for this story, including the splash shown above. Any such changes would have to use white-out or other editing tools that would be completely obvious in the original art.

I have to say that I am rather dubious about another aspect of Williamson?s story, that Joe did not like his art. Simon used Al for inking Kirby pencils and for doing his own pencils for a number of Harvey comics for which Joe was the editor. While it is possible that Simon?s opinion changed just a couple of years later it would have to change again. When I knew him, Joe was a great admirer of Williamson?s art.

I suspect that the writing at the bottom of the page (present on the other pages as well) is a later addition. Usually the art was identified in ink in the upper left. In this case ?FLY #2-P-9?, page 9 of issue 2 of Adventures of the Fly. It would remain on the proofs made when the art was shot for productions but could easily be removed before final printing. Occasionally someone forgot to remove them or did a poor job at it and they can be seen in part or whole in the printed comic books. This notation was done in ink to insure that it was still present when the initial stats were made. Pencils were problematic when photo imaging the original art to stats since they were not dark enough to insure a good image but too dark to be sure that they did not show up at all. Which is why pencils were erased after the inking was completed. While pencils notations like that at the bottom could easily be removed during the production process, they are redundant and do not serve any purpose.

Adventures of the Fly #2 (September 1959) ?One Of Our Skyscrapers Is Missing? the back of page 2

Sometimes rather interesting things can be found on the back of comic book art. However in the case of this story the back of the pages are pretty much unadorned. The only exception is page 2 which is shown above. An explanation is in order about the writing in pencil that reads SI-0029. This is the Simon Inventory number, and yes I am to blame. I did the inventory for Joe?s collection and it was a difficult task. Joe had over 1500 pages of original comic book art (not including many production proofs). I needed a way to keep track of it while the inventory was being created. So I assigned inventory numbers that I placed on the back usually near an edge and always in an area without anything significant. I suspect that for page 2 I placed the inventory number further from the edge because of the water stain. Inventory numbers were assigned as I inventoried the piece and have no significance other than order that I encountered them while working. There was one exception in that I generally assigned inventory numbers for original art to numbers less than 1000 and used the higher numbers for things like proofs. I also assigned the same inventory number to all pages belonging to the same story. This helped me in getting the collection better organized as originally pages to a story were often scattered about in different places.

Note the two small black irregular patches. I believe these to be due to the inker preparing his brush. Similar markings, although much more extensive, can be found on the back of other pages that I believed Williamson inked. However these two small marks are the only examples found on the back of this story or any other one that Joe had from the Adventures of the Fly title.

One thing that is common to backs of all the original art for this story, and indeed of most original art from the period, was the Comic Code approval stamp. Today the stamp is of use because it provides a terminal date for the creation of the art. Art could have started earlier, and even inventoried for a period of time, but the stamp was only applied to completed art ready for publication. Thus this art was finished no later than May 29, 1959. The same date appears for the approval stamp for ?Marco?s Eyes?, ?Tim O?Casey?s Wrecking Crew?, ?The Master of Junk-Ri-La? and some of the fillers from the same issue. Comic book cover dates were used by the publisher to indicate when to take the issue off the stands and sent back to the distributor. When converting the cover date to the date the art was created I usually subtract five or six months. Two months for the time on the stands, one month for distribution, one month for printing and one month or more to create the art. From that scheme I would expect the approval stamp to be four months before the cover date. But it is just an estimate as there was much variations in the publication of comic books. For Adventures of the Fly #2 the stamp appears to be closer to three months before the cover date.

Adventures of the Fly #2 (September 1959) ?One Of Our Skyscrapers Is Missing? close-up from back of page 2 of a Batman sketch by Al Williamson

The back of page 2 has one other feature that might be a little hard to make out in the full page image but when enlarged and rotated 180 degrees turns out to be a sketch of Batman. Obviously Batman would not appear in a Harvey comic book so it maybe nothing more than a doodle or a drawing done to demonstrate some point.
